CCTV (Closed – circuit television) Camera is a TV system in which signals are not publicly distributed but are monitored, primarily for surveillance and security purposes.

CCTV Camera relies on strategic placement of cameras and observation of the camera’s input on monitors somewhere. Because the cameras communicate with monitors and video recorders across private coaxial cable runs or wireless communication links, they gain the designation “closed-circuit” to indicate that access to their content is limited by design only to those able to see it.

Modern CCTV Camera displays can be color, high-resolution displays and can include the ability to zoom in on an image or track something or someone among their features. Talk CCTV allows an overseer to speak to people within range of the camera’s associated speakers.

Older CCTV Camera systems used small, low resolution black and white monitors with no interactive capabilities.

Types of CCTV Cameras

There are 8 different types of CCTV cameras.

  • Dome CCTV camera: Dome cameras get their name from the dome-shaped housing in which they sit. The dome shape makes it difficult to tell the direction that these cameras are facing and thus are ideal for deterring criminals.
  • Bullet CCTV camera: Bullet CCTV cameras have a long cylindrical and tapered shape, similar to that of “rifle bullet” often used in applications that require long distance viewing.
  • C-mount CCTV camera: C-Mount CCTV cameras have detachable lenses to fit different applications standard. CCTV camera lenses can only cover distances of between35 and 40 feet. Therefore with C-Mount CCTV cameras, it is possible to use special lenses, which can cover distances greater than 40ft.
  • Day/Night CCTV camera
  • Infrared/Night vision CCTV camera
  • Network lip CCTV camera
  • Wireless CCTV camera
  • High-Definition HD CCTV camera

Here are the 3 keys things to look for when buying a CCTV Camera.

  1. The kind of cable used: The two types of cables used for the installation of CCTV are plug and play cables and RG59 Coax Siamese cable.
  2. Plug and play cables are very easy to use. They are much like the standard Audio/video RCA cables used to hook up stereo and television equipment. The connector ends for power, video and audio are all preattached and color coded. Red for power, yellow for video and white for audio.
  3. RG59 Coax Siamese Cable. This contains a video coaxial cable and a pair of 18 gauge power cables in one jacket. RG59 is a heavily shield cable which is better insulated against interference and better to use when there is a long distance to run between your cameras and DVR.
