Why Every Public Transport Vehicle in Ethiopia Must Use a Speed Governor

Why Every Public Transport Vehicle in Ethiopia Must Use a Speed Governor

A speed governor, also known as a speed limiter is a device used to measure and regulate the speed of a machine, such as an engine. There are six basic types of governors and an example is the Mechanical centrifugal flyweight which relies on a set of rotating flyweights.

Speed governors in Ethiopia are used to tackle the growing number of road accidents. This is done by the Federal Transport Authority of Ethiopia.

Speed governors are now mandatory for public transport vehicles. The government officially launched the installation and use of speed governors in public and commercial vehicles in an attempt to reduce road accidents resulting from speeding.

The device limits vehicles to a maximum speed of 60 kilometers per hour and has the capacity to trim down the speed to 25 kilometers per hour every time the vehicle attempt to exceed the set maximum velocity.

In addition, it has a storage computer which allows controllers or traffic offices to check the previous speed of the vehicle, and errors if the device is tampered with.

Speed governors in Ethiopia will not only regulate the speed at which we move on our roads but also contribute tremendously to reducing road accidents and traffic offenses. This also comes with comfort and relaxation on the side of the passengers who will, this time around, not be worried about likely accidents because of reckless speeding by drivers.

Every public transport vehicle in Ethiopia must use a speed governor because drivers are the prime beneficiaries. This is because in most cases when an accident occurs, drivers are the first victims. Again, this is also an economic and saving factor because the driver is the one who incurs loses by paying penalties for speeding.

Speed governors in Ethiopia are essential because it protects the engine and the car itself. Another important factor is the car’s tires.

6 Safe Driving Tips You Need to Know When Driving in Fog

6 Safe Driving Tips You Need to Know When Driving in Fog

Driving in fog is considered to be the most dangerous weather hazard, most importantly if it is in a dense fog or combined with other adverse weather conditions. Fog can make driving difficult and even more dangerous especially when one is a seasoned pro behind the wheel.

If you must drive in foggy conditions, there are some safety tips one have to keep in mind. They include:

The Distance between your car and the one in front of you should be plenty. Once your visibility is decreased it means one could be braking often. In other words, slow down. It may take you longer to get to your destination, but your safety is worth it.

Take advantage of your windshield wipers and defrosters. Moisture and ice on your windshield can create a fierce or angry stare, which can make it even more difficult to see. Give yourself the best view possible by clearing off your windshield completely so that one can be able to see clearly.

Resist the common urge to use the lights of any vehicles in front of you as a guide. This can actually cause you to focus too much on the narrow patch (a small area that is different in some way from the area that surrounds it) of the landscape in front of you – causing you to miss other things.

Don’t accelerate if a car behind you is too close. It can be tempting to try and “lose” the guy who is right on your tail, but that can actually make your situation more dangerous. Stick to a safe, reasonable speed limit in the fog, even if other drivers don’t.

“Follow the right-side line of the road to guide you,” suggests AccuWeather. That’s easy enough to remember. Don’t be afraid to slow down and drive cautiously along the right side of the roadway. Roadside reflectors can help guide you, as well.

Check your mirrors before slowing down, and gently apply your brakes. The earlier you can start to tap the brakes, the better. Your brake lights will alert drivers behind you that you are slowing down, and you won’t catch them by surprise with a sudden stop.

In a nutshell, heavy fog can cut down on a driver’s visibility and create dangerous driving conditions. It is important to stay focused and use extra caution if you need to drive during heavy fog.

The Use of Low Quality Speed Governors in Kenya

The Use of Low Quality Speed Governors in Kenya

The National Road Safety Council member and noted road safety expert Kamal Soi has said that the use of low-quality speed governors is on the rise in Kerala, leading to accident facilities. This may be due to the transport department not keeping a register on governors.

The causes of low-quality speed governors in Kenya been used is as follows:

Firstly, in addressing a press conference at Kerala, Mr. Soi said that speed governors without the quality certificate, serial, and model numbers were widely used in vehicles.

Secondly, vehicles with such low-quality speed governors in Kenya were also being issued fitness certificates owing to official ignorance about the guidelines on speed governors.

Also, the state government consistently failed in the implementation of speed governors which is critical to road safety. The state transportation department was not keeping a register on the details of speed governors and was in effect certifying unrecognized speed governors

Fitness certificates were being issued to even those vehicles without physical verification by Regional Transport offices through a letter was sent to the state of government pointing out such irregularities in March last and September, no action was forthcoming.

Another letter was sent on April 14, seeking action against companies responsible for manufacturing faulty speed governors. No action was taken in this either. an action against such companies was called for and the state government was asked to shed its apathy towards road safety.

As per the National Crime Records Bureau, the number of deaths caused by accidents has been increasing in the state. The number has risen from 4,000 in 2014 to 4,196 a year after.

In a nutshell, the union government opted for tough implementation of speed governors based on the realization that over speeding by heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks caused most of the accidents.

Safety Tips for Driving in Smoke

Safety Tips for Driving in Smoke

Every year, cities, towns and communities suffer from the effects of massive wildfires on the West Coast. Not only are we seeing the impact of these fires, but the heavy and dangerous smoke that spreads as a result.

Experts say that smoke from wildfires can rise three to five miles in the air, then travel up to thousands of miles. Here are some recommendations by the Law enforcement agencies and safety advocates on driving in smoke:

  • Slow down: Practice good defensive driving and give people around you time to respond. You will never regret driving too slow.
  • Roll up the windows: This should be common sense, but keep the windows up and use the “recirculate air” feature so that dirty air from the outside isn’t funneled in.
  • Drive predictably: While you should always do so, driving predictably when there’s decreased visibility is very important. Avoid slamming on the brakes, and always use your turn signals. Don’t tailgate.
  • Don’t use your hazards: While it may seem like a good idea, at slow speeds and low visibility it may appear that you are stopped on the road.
  • Avoid driving: If you know a certain area has particularly bad smoke or low visibility, try to avoid it. Check weather reports and TV news to see where the conditions and traffic are the worst.
  • Turn on your headlights: Even in the middle of the day, having your headlights on allows other drivers to see your car more easily. At night, use your low beams and turn on fog lights (if possible).
  • Watch for livestock and wildlife: In rural areas, wildfires and smoke may have forced animals onto or near roadways.
  • Watch for emergency vehicles: Slow down and move over to pass.
  • Don’t drive with a flat tire or locked brakes: Sparks coming off your car could start a fire in the current dry conditions.
  • Don’t throw cigarette butts out: In the dry conditions, the lit butts could start a fire.

The Six Basic Types of Quality and Affordable Speed Governors

The Six Basic Types of Quality and Affordable Speed Governors

A governor, or a speed limiter or controller, is a device used to measure and regulate the speed of a machine, such as an engine.

The type of governor used on diesel engines is dependent upon the application required. The six basic types of quality and affordable governors are as follows:

Mechanical Centrifugal

This is a flyweight style that relies on a set of rotation flyweight and a control spring. This has been used since the inception of the diesel engine to control its speed.

Power Assisted

This type is a servomechanical style that operates similar to the mechanical centrifugal flyweight but uses engine oil under pressure to move the operating linkage.

Hydraulic Governor

Another quality and affordable speed governors entail their Hydraulic Governor. This relies on the movement of a pilot valve plunger to control pressurized oil flow to a power piston, which, in turn, moves the fuel control (a control system for gas and turbine engine) mechanism.

Pneumatic Governor

The pneumatic governor is the type responsive to the air flow (vacuum) in the intake magnified of an engine. A diaphragm within the governor housing is connected to the fuel control linkage that changes its setting with increases or decreases in the vacuum.

Electromechanical Governor

This uses a magnetic speed pickup sensor on an engine-driven component to monitor the rpm of the engine. The sensor sends a voltage signal to an electronic control unit that controls the current flow to a mechanical actuator connected to the fuel linkage.

Electronic Governor

This type is also quality and affordable. It uses a magnetic speed sensor to monitor the rpm of the engine. The sensor continuously feeds information back to the ECM (Electronic Control Module). The ECM then computes all the information sent from all other engine sensors, such from all other engines, such as the throttle position sensor and temperature sensor.

Governors, in summary, can be used on heavy-duty trucks and on diesel engines as well. Looking for quality and affordable speed governors?
