What You Must Know About Speed Governors

Sharing is caring!

Speed governor is a governor used to limit the top speed of a vehicle. For some closes of vehicle and in some jurisdictions they are a statutory requirement. For some other vehicles the manufacturer provides a non-statutory system which may be fixed or programmable by the driver.

Road speed governors were developed to improve safety and the environment by controlling the top speed of vehicles, thus reducing serious accidents and pollution.

The basic work of the device is to limit the maximum speed of vehicle to a present level. In most cases the restriction in the top speed has shown to dramatically reduce the amount of fuel used.

The reduction of fuel costs is an important part of most work or companies. The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions is also becoming a key factor for many companies.

When a reduction in fuel consumptions recorded, a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is much lower at 70 mph as opposed to 80 plus mph the engine and vehicle component wear can also be reduced. Governor types are centrifugal governors and inertia governors.

Centrifugal Governor

In centrifugal governors, multiple masses knows as governor balls, are responsible to revolve about the axis of a shaft, which driven through suitable gearing from the engine crankshaft. Each ball is acted upon by a force which a force which act in the radially inward direction and is provided by dead weight, a spring or a combination of two.

This force is commonly called as the controlling force and it will increase as the distance of the ball from the axis of rotation increases. The inward or outward movement of the ball is transmitted by the governor mechanism to the valve which controls the amount of energy supplied to the engine.

Inertia Governors

In inertia governors, the balls are arranged in manner that the inertia forces caused by angular acceleration or retardation of the governor shaft tend to change their position.

Obvious advantage of inertia governor lies in its rapid response to the effect of a change of load. The advantage of inertia governor is small, by the practiced difficult of arranging for the complete balance of the revolving parts of the governor.

The cons of speed governor;

  • Unintended safety consequences
  • Increased congestion
  • Loss of profit for small owner-operations.

Whatever the case, safety remains a primary concern.
