World Bank Policies for Road Safety Management in Africa

Road Safety is a very important issue of global concern. Road accidents are one of the top killers of humanity. Every year an estimated number of 1.3 million die from road traffic crashes and 78 million get injured. This is very alarming!

African is one of the continents with about 90% of their transport activities done via road. Road networks aid the transfer of goods and services, transaction of business, access to health care, education and so on. Africa is said to also have only 2% of the world’s vehicles.

But it is amazing to know that 16% of road accident fatalities occur in Africa. With only 2% of the world’s vehicles and 16% of the global road fatalities according to World Bank Group, it tells you that more needs to be done to reduce the increasing rate of road accidents in Africa.

Road deaths in Sub-Saharan African are projected to increase dramatically looking at the current road fatalities to move from 243,000 in 2015 to 514,000 by 2030. This is the reason for the World Bank policies for road safety management in Africa.
