5 Tips for Night Driving

Sharing is caring!

Night driving is a very challenging task. Therefore it is necessary to know the rules and best practices to ensure safety when driving at night. Here are top five night driving tips you must keep watch of.

  1. Aim your headlights.

Headlights in brand-new cars are sometimes uneven or pointed lower than necessary. So it’s worth the effort to aim them correctly. If you want to do it yourself, use the instructions provided in your manual. Just make sure those newly aimed lights do not blind you from incoming traffic.

Lights that are aimed correctly can glow well. So be sure to clean the road engine from your headlights often. Also, one can buy a headlight polish kit to remove the haze so your lights shine through brightly.

  1. Don’t stare at oncoming lights.

Bright lights can seriously disrupt your concentration at night. Inside the car, your eyes are used to the dim glow of the instrument panel and the dark road ahead.

It is very easy to become distracted and stare into a bright road sign or the headlights of an 18 – wheeler headed your way without even realizing it. Turn your gaze away from other lights on the road and don’t look at the oncoming light beams.

  1. Clean and adjust your exterior mirror.

Dirty mirrors reflect the light from cars behind you in a wider and diffused shape that can produce glare in your eyes. So clean them up.

Also, aim the exterior mirrors so that you can move your head out of the path of lights reflected in them. That way you can see cars behind you by tipping your head slightly forward. But you have to keep the other car’s headlights out of your eyes and prevent them from temporarily blinding you with their high beams.

  1. Slow down.

As a general rule, night driving requires slower speed than daytime driving. Because visibility is much lower at night time than during the day; it takes longer to see and react to traffic hazards, pedestrians and other obstacles.

Since you can’t control the types of hazards you will encounter when driving, your smartest move is simply to drive slowly, giving yourself more time to react to any problem you come across.

  1. Take all normal day time driving precautions.

It may seem obvious, but it definitely bears mentioning that all of the safety precautions you take during the day are especially important at night. Make sure to buckle up, adjust your seats and mirrors, put away your cell phone and focus on driving while you are behind the wheel.
