How to Install A Speed Governor

Sharing is caring!

A speed governor is a device used to measure and regulate the speed of a machine, such as an engine. Road speed governor were developed to improve safety and the environment by controlling the top speed of vehicles.

They reduce serious accidents and pollution. The basic function of the system is to limit the maximum speed of a vehicle to a preset level whilst the accelerator pedal is fully depressed without a noticeable variation in the speed.

This restriction in the top speed has shown to dramatically reduce the amount of fuel used when compared to higher top speeds. The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions is also becoming a major factor for many companies.

There are two types of governors namely:

  1. Centrifugal governors
  2. Inertia governors

Inertia governors: Compared with the other governor, inertia governors work on a different principle. The balls are arranged in way such that inertia forces are caused due to angular shaft to change their position. With the help of the springs the displacement of the balls are calculated and controlled.

By using the governor mechanism the energy supply to the engine is calculated. The positions of the balls are exaggerated by the rate of revolution of the speed of the shaft.

Centrifugal governors are used to balancing the rotating balls by using the centrifugal force. Two balls with equal mass are attached to the arms, they are called as fly balls or governor balls. With the help of spindle, balls rotate and the engine is driven by the bevel gear. To the spindle upper end arms are joined, when the balls are revolving about the vertical axis they move up and down.

Centrifugal governors are mainly divided into two.

  • Pendulum type
  • Loaded type

The pendulum governor consists of watt governor.

The loaded type governor are mainly divided into two types, they are;

  • Dead weight governor
  • Spring controlled governor

The dead weight governors are divided into two types. They are:

  • Porter governor
  • Proell governor

In the porter governor dead weights are placed on the sleeves and balls are attached on the hinges.

The spring controlled governors are also divided into four types.

  • Pickering governor
  • Hartnell governor
  • Wilson hartnell governor

Hartnell governor is also known as spring loaded governor. Two bell crank levers. Joints are arranged on the frame to the governor spindle a frame is attached and then made to rotate with it.
