The World’s Worst Countries for Drunk Driving

Sharing is caring!

Drunk driving is a serious crime punishable by law. A part from the punishment the law gives to people found guilty, the victims expose themselves and other passengers to serious road injuries and crashes.

According to the World Health Organization, about 1.25 million people die each year as result of road crashes. These road crashes absorbs about 3% of the domestic gross revenue of many countries. WHO also predicted that by 2030, road crashes will become the 7th leading cause of death in the world.

Why would countries lead themselves to death through drunk driving?

Driving under the influence of alcohol is noted by WHO as one of the notable cause of road crashes.

South Africa tops the list as the worst country fond of drunk driving. According to WHO’s Global Status Report on Road Safety for 2015, 25.1 deaths for every 100,000 in South Africa are caused by drunk driving. It was also noted that 6 out 10 road fatalities in South Africa are as a result of drunk driving.

Canada ranks second on the list with 43 percent of road accidents caused by drunk driving. This is striking in developed countries since most people get depressed, party and lead themselves to death. United States and Germany follow the list with a rate of 34 and 9 percent respectively.
